<image:title>News & Updates - New Research Reveals How Human Impacts Are Rewiring Nature’s Food Webs - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Figure 1: A conceptual diagram of asymmetric rewiring. The spatial compartmentation of food webs combined with the differential impacts of anthropogenic pressures on distinct habitats drives asymmetric rewiring. In spatially compartmented food webs, lower trophic level organisms (blue and yellow circles) occupy distinct habitats (Habitat 1 and Habitat 2) while generalist consumers at higher trophic levels (black circles) forage across habitat boundaries, linking otherwise discrete energy pathways within food webs. As anthropogenic pressures, such as climate change, biological invasions, and land conversion, affect these habitats unevenly, they induce differential impacts that alter the topology (presence of circles and black arrows), interaction strengths (width of black arrows), and the size and quality of the nodes (size of circles) within the food web. For simplicity, the figure shows a generalist top predator coupling resources from two distinct habitats. As pressures intensify, the predator adjusts its foraging, causing shifts in the spatial structure of the food web, resulting in asymmetric rewiring.</image:caption>

In the chart, darker green represents the timescales of processes that have the greatest influence on – or applicability for – predictions made at the corresponding timescales. He uses network theory to better understand how species interact and communities function, with a focus on identifying and addressing biases to make these network models more reliable and useful. <image:caption>Trophic groups as a function of trophic level. The nodes of this network represent the trophic groups, with their size proportional to the number of species in the group. Groups are positioned according to the average trophic level of the species they contain, from the bottom of the metaweb (basal preys) to the top (top predators), and coloured according to in-degree (i.e. predatory generalism). Silhouettes represent the characteristic species found in each trophic group and reflect the taxonomic coherence of these groups. The width and intensity of the links between two given groups represent the number of realized links between them - that is, the number of species pairs belonging to both groups and that co-occur at least once in Europe [Credit: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jbi.13773]</image:caption>

<image:title>Publications - NEW STUDY: GLOBAL FOOD PRODUCTION IS SHRINKING ANIMALS AND PLANTS</image:title>
<image:caption>For centuries, society has prioritized maximizing food production, transforming ecosystems by reducing species diversity and body size into more uniform yet productive environments. The trade-off between productivity and stability is often overlooked in global food security discussions, despite weakened ecosystem resilience. Reviewing key studies, this research (with input from CEM Director Dr. Kevin McCann) highlights how human activities have rewired and destabilized food webs, stressing the need to preserve landscape diversity and key food web structures for sustainable food production.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postdoctoral Program - Dr. Charlotte Ward</image:title>
<image:caption>Postdoctoral Fellow (McCann Lab) Charlotte is an ecologist whose research explores the relationships between food web structure, resilience, and ecosystem functioning in a changing world. A central focus of her work is understanding how species respond to natural and human-driven environmental variation, and how these responses propagate through whole food webs to alter pathways of energy flow that underpin ecosystem processes. She combines theoretical and empirical approaches, working primarily in aquatic systems with a particular emphasis on freshwater fishes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Postdoctoral Program - How to apply join us as a postdoctoral fellow</image:title>
<image:caption>We welcome applications aligned with the following theme: Adaptation in changing environments Keywords: eco-evolutionary dynamics, adaptation to global change, blue foods The global environment is changing at an unprecedented rate, altering conditions for all of life on Earth. Natural systems face an increasing number of environmental stressors, in many cases altering individual performance, population persistence and species interactions. We are seeking candidates whose research addresses eco-evolutionary dynamics, population persistence, ecological resilience and/or productivity in the face of environmental change and how biological adaptation determines processes and patterns at larger scales. Successful applicants will work in a highly collaborative environment around themes including (but not limited to): 1) eco-evolutionary dynamics in changing environments OR 2) effects of environmental change on ‘blue foods’ (foods from aquatic sources).</image:caption>

<image:title>Postdocs - Gallery - Dr.

This project seeks to operationalize the assessment of timing windows for interventions in freshwater ecosystems and involves conceptual developments as well as the development decision-support tools. Through his firm, David Beauchesne will also be involved in the new NSERC Alliance Grant project titled “Rewired Great Lakes Food Webs: Implications for Fish Production and Resilience” that seeks to analyze and synthesize patterns in Great Lakes food webs rewiring to forecast future fisheries productions and ecosystem resilience to guide management and decision-making.</image:caption>
