Recognizing Research Excellence: Dr. Bernhardt Honoured with Stevenson Lectureship
We are delighted to announce that our own Dr. Joey Bernhardt has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Stevenson Lectureship Award, a distinguished honour established in memory of Cam Stevenson, the long-time Editor of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CJFAS) and administered by the journal.
The Stevenson Lectureship recognizes exceptional scientific leadership and achievement in the aquatic sciences. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated originality, creativity, and novelty, the scientific importance and potential impact of their work, and evidence of a breakthrough contribution within a particular area of research. As the awardee, Dr. Bernhardt will deliver a plenary lecture during the opening session of the joint conference of the International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences (SCAS) being held May 25 - 29, 2026 in Winnipeg, MB.
Dr. Bernhardt’s published work spans topics such as biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, ecological and metabolic theory, and the responses of aquatic systems to warming and other global stressors. Through a combination of empirical studies and theoretical approaches, her research seeks to address how biodiversity and metabolic processes shape ecosystem dynamics and support human well-being. In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Bernhardt is strongly committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists, supporting postdoctoral fellows at the Centre for Ecosystem Management as well as training undergraduate and graduate students in her laboratory at the University of Guelph.
We congratulate Dr. Bernhardt on this outstanding achievement!
