In an open letter, 56 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada call for amendments to the legislation, warning that efforts to accelerate major infrastructure and development projects must not come at the expense of environmental protections, biodiversity, and long-term public health.

Of particular relevance to the fisheries industry is Division 7, Clause 189, which would amend the Fisheries Act to allow the Minister to authorize individuals or organizations to “pay a fee fixed under section 13 to offset the harmful effects of the work, undertaking or activity on fish or fish habitat.” This proposed provision raises important questions about how impacts on fish and fish habitat would be addressed, and the role of financial offsets in protecting aquatic ecosystems.

Our Director, Dr. McCann, is among the signatories of this letter, adding his support to the call for careful consideration of the bill and its potential long-term implications. This involvement underscores the importance of ensuring that policies designed to advance national priorities also account for the protection of Canada's natural environment and the well-being of future generations.
