Welcome, Dr. Carling Bieg!
We are excited to welcome Dr. Carling Bieg to the Centre for Ecosystem Management! Dr. Bieg is a theoretical ecologist who studies how ecological systems respond to global change across scales of space, time, and the ecological hierarchy. Her work asks big-picture questions about how stressors—from climate change to human activity—interact with the underlying processes of ecosystems to shape their structure, function, and long-term stability.
Much of Dr. Bieg’s research focuses on aquatic ecosystems facing multiple pressures, such as fishing, climate change, and eutrophication. By exploring how these combined stressors affect resilience, she provides insight into the sustainability of ecosystems that humans rely on for biodiversity, food security, and ecological services. At the same time, her interests are broad: she often draws inspiration from different ecosystem types to uncover the general rules and principles that govern ecosystem resilience.
With a background that includes a recent postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University, she strengthens CEM’s mission of linking ecological research to global sustainability. By bridging theory, data, and applied challenges, Dr. Bieg’s work will help us better understand how ecosystems can adapt, persist, or transform in a rapidly changing world.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Carling Bieg to the CEM community—we look forward to the collaborations, insights, and innovations she will bring to our team and the wider field of ecosystem science.
